Aswan German Hospital

Aswan, Egypt
The Evangelical Mission Hospital (also known as Al-Germaniyya) was founded in Aswan 1913 by German and Swiss doctors. The hospital today is under Egyptian leadership, and is still in partnership with a German mission organization. People from all over the region, even from as far as 300km away, come to the hospital to receive medical care regardless of their religious background or ethnic origin. Due to their high quality of service over the years, the hospital has built a relationship of trust with the local community. Often times a patient would choose Al-Germaniyya over a better equipped hospital because of this relationship. Each year they care for more than 2,000 in-patients and see more than 20,000 patients in their out-patient clinics. Two rural clinics care for an additional 5,000 patients each year. The impact of the hospital continues to grow as they expand their services and upgrade their current facilities and equipment.

The hospital campus is located directly on the Corniche of the Nile, right in the heart of Aswan with great views of and access to beautiful Nile River. The site also has access to a side street to the south that is currently used as the main vehicular and pedestrian entrance to the site. Most of the neighboring sites to the south are multi-story residential buildings. To the north is a single story shopping building on the Corniche Street, and a vacant lot. To the North East of the site is an area protected by the Antiquities Ministry that houses the ruins of an ancient Egyptian Temple.

As the hospital adds services, increases ministries, and upgrades their medical equipment, there is a need to expand, and re-organize the facilities on their 100 year old campus. The purpose of our project is to provide a clear and comprehensive map of the existing campus and all of the existing buildings.  This report also documents the current uses of the spaces including the personnel, as well as the expressed future needs of the hospital campus.

Because of the existing inefficient and under-utilized spaces, and the need for additional space, the Mission has asked IDD to create a phased master plan for the entire campus that can be implemented over the next 30 years. Establishing a long-term plan before building will help ensure the best use of the property and financial resources, and will establish a realistic attainable plan to see their vision become reality.
